The 27th Boat Marathon: Celebrating Croatia's Heritage on the Neretva River

The 27th Boat Marathon: Celebrating Croatia's Heritage on the Neretva River

Did you know that the 27th Boat Marathon, one of the most renowned rowing competitions in Croatia, will take place on August 10, 2024?

The marathon follows a route from Metković through Opuzen to Ploče, covering a total of 22.5 kilometers, as rowers compete in honor of the long-standing tradition and historical significance of the boats.

The Neretva region is known for its rich history and unique boatman tradition, which dates back centuries. The boats, traditional vessels once used for transporting goods and people through the calm and swift waters of the Neretva River, have become a symbol of pride for the local population. In the past, these boats were the main means of transportation between small villages along the river. They were used for carrying agricultural products, wood, and even as a means of escape from enemies. Today, the boats are an indispensable part of the region’s culture and tradition, with their role revived every year in the grand boat race.

The boat race, held every second Saturday in August, has become recognized throughout Croatia and beyond its borders. This competition attracts both locals and visitors from other parts of Croatia, as well as foreign tourists who want to witness this authentic tradition. The race is a special event that celebrates community spirit, athletic endurance, and the history of this region.

This race is not just a sporting challenge; it is a reminder of the boats' historical significance to the local community!

More information about the race and its history can be found on the official website.
